Introduced in 1884, Moxie was the original soft drink in the United States. In fact, the word “moxie,” which means “energy” or “pep,” originated with the Moxie soft drink brand. The word perfectly describes this unusual, quirky cola, which has many brand loyalists in the New England area.

Moxie was first marketed in 1876 as a medicine by a doctor in Maine who guaranteed it to cure multiple ills. In 1957, baseball legend Ted Williams promoted the drink and continued as a Moxie spokesperson for several years.

Today, Moxie’s followers are as enthusiastic as ever. A group of 300 in New England call themselves the “Moxie Congress,” and are working to preserve the 100-year-old Moxie Bottle House, a 33-foot tall wooden bottle initially used as an advertising gimmick. Even more surprising is that at one time, a New Hampshire couple purchased the Bottle House and lived in it year-round.

Moxie comes in its original flavor and in a low-calorie version, Diet Moxie.
